Judy Gregory is an information designer and communication specialist with 20 years' experience in working for clients in the government, university, and community sectors.
Judy is best known for her expertise as a writer, designer, and researcher of community education resources, including resources designed to communicate in plain English about complex issues. She is also a skilled qualitative researcher with experience in interviewing and focus group techniques, report writing, and literature reviews.
Judy is interested in the ways that people interact with and use information particularly information that is designed to inform or educate them about social issues. She has worked for a wide range of community and government organisations on projects varying from national information campaigns, awareness weeks, research projects, and educational resources, through to lobbying efforts, conferences, and training.
Judy holds a PhD and Masters degree in information design. - Her PhD research examined what motivates young people to read information about community education issues, particularly brochures and postcards about health. Her thesis, Informing young people: What motivates young people to read community education resources, describes the decision-making process that young people go through as they decide whether information is worth the effort of reading. Her research was conducted at the University of Reading in the UK.
- Judy's masters research explored the collaborative work practices of public relations practitioners, writers, and graphic designers. The research looked at information design within public relations practice, and charted the experiences of practitioners in developing printed information resources for public relations campaigns. Her research was conducted at Queensland University of Technology.
Judy established Information Design Centre in 2005. From 1995 until 2005, she was a lecturer in communication at Queensland University of Technology. From 1995 until 1999, she operated a small writing and design consultancy, The Write Response. In 1989, Judy joined the social issues consultancy Social Change Media and its associated publishing company Pluto Press Australia. In 1992, she opened Social Change Media's first branch office, in Brisbane.
Judy is a Fellow of the Society of Business Communicators (Qld), a Member of the Society of Editors (Qld), a Member of the International Association for Public Participation (Australasia), and a Member of the International Association of Business Communicators. She is a registered reviewer for the International Journal of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Marketing, and has been invited to judge industry awards for the Public Relations Institute of Australia and the Society for Technical Communication. She lectures in communication part-time at Queensland University of Technology.
